The crisis at Japan's nuclear power plants has raised serious concerns over America's nuclear reactors. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission told Congress that our reactors can withstand natural disasters. But many critics disagree.

There are two types of nuclear reactors: pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor. (view animations) Nuclear reactors are built to withstand certain levels of disaster based on an area's history.  But if an unprecedented disaster takes place, it's impossible to know whether they would remain safe.

Nearly half of America's 104 nuclear reactors are close to major fault lines. 

Based on input from experts in nuclear energy, engineering and risk assessment, The Daily Beast has ranked the safety of America's country's power plant sites. Three metrics determined the ranking: risk of natural disaster, safety performance assessments, and surrounding population.
