Heat Assistance Runs Out On Reservations

(Keloland Television Report)

Federal money for low-income heating aid is running out on several South Dakota American Indian reservations as the mercury plummets well below zero. On the Rosebud reservation, some electricity customers have had their service shut off, and others are running out of propane and wood.  A tribal official says one person in a remote area was reduced to burning clothes for heat.  The Oglala Sioux Tribe's $664,000 in federal low-income energy aid for this year already has run out. The tribal energy coordinator says he is working with congressional delegation officials to find other funding. The tribe, on the Pine Ridge reservation, has a list of members waiting for help.

From Tamra:

On most winter days, temperatures on the Pine Ridge Reservations barely reach 0° F. Some days it gets up to the teens. Last night was about -15° F. We had up to -35° F for several nights as well.  People are having to burn their clothes to generate heat.  Help is needed.

Many non profit organizations work to get funding for heating assistance and every dollar helps. PLEASE make a donation to help get propane to Indian people on the reservations!  I completely trust and endorse the Link Center Foundation:  I know that all the funds go to help the people.

I also want to remind you about my Helping the Rez program,   One of our available programs is the ink cartridge recycling program.  It does not cost you any money -- just turn in your ink cartridges to the company I am working thru.  All proceeds will be donated to Link Center Foundation for propane assistance.

Also, for the folks that are here in South Dakota, the Forest Service has FREE PERMITS to cut and gather fire wood in designated areas. These areas are spread across the Black Hills and hold tons of usable woods. Just contact your local Forest Service office or visit my my website.
