Grandmother Flordemayo

 The sacred Mayan prophecies have stated, "A time will come when the eagle of the north shall meet with the condor of the south. At this time, all the tribes will join together and form a Gathering of Elders. In these gatherings the elders will share their traditions and medicines with each other. When the elders have gathered, they will then disburse to share this ancient knowledge and wisdom with all of humanity." This prophecy has come to pass.

The youngest of 15 children, Mayan elder Flordemayo was born in the big highlands of Central America on the Nicaragua/ Honduras border. She grew up in a family of traditional healers. When she was 4 years-old, Flordemayo began learning the art of “Curanderismo” in the traditional way: taught from mother to daughter, generation to generation.  She received her Mayan priest training from Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj, a respected spiritual leader and head of the Quiche Maya Council of Elders.

Flordemayo is President of The Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, an organization that carries the wisdoms of traditional native people to a global audience. She is a featured speaker on Curanderismo at international conferences about traditional medicines, She has also worked with Native American and alternative western healers, and her knowledge and healing skills are recognized by medical doctors, nurses and medical institutions.  Flordemayo has received the Martin De La Cruz Award for Alternative Healing, a prestigious honor given by the International Congress of Traditional Medicine.

Since 1999 Flordemayo has been a part of the Wisdom of the Grandmother’s Foundation. Currently Flordemayo is a member of the Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. She is also a founding member and President of  the Institute of Natural and Traditional Knowledge.

Although many Mayans live in Mexico, Grandmother Flordemayo reminds us that the Mayan culture is centered mainly in the area from the Peten Rainforest through Nicaragua.
