The Legend of Atrahasisi: Who made the
metropolis? Why?
The "gods" After 3,600 years of this work, the "gods" begin to complain. They went on strike, burned their tools, and surrounded the dwelling of the chief God, Enlil. Enlil's vizier, Nusku, gets Enlil out of bed and alerts him to the angry mob outside. Enlil is scared. (His face is described as being "sallow as a tamarisk.") Nusku advises Enlil to summon the other great "gods", especially Anu (sky-god) and Enki (the clever god of the fresh waters). Anu advises Enlil to find the ringleader of the rebellion, so they send Nusku out to ask the mob of "gods". The mob answers, "Every single one of us "gods" has declared war!" (Dalley 12, Atrahasis). The upper-class "gods" now see that the work of the lower-class "gods" "was too hard." They decide to sacrifice one rebel for the good of all. They will take one "god," kill him, and make mankind by mixing the "god's" flesh and blood with clay:
After Enki instructs them on monthly purification rituals, the "gods" slaughter Geshtu-e, "a god who had intelligence" (his name means "ear" or "wisdom"). They form mankind from his blood and some clay that the earth goddess then mixes. All the "gods" trooped by and spit on it. Then Enki and the womb-goddess take the clay into "the room of fate" where other goddesses are present.
The result was a hybrid or "evolved human" who was more intelligent, could perform the worker "gods" physical duties, and could take care of all the "gods" needs. Other texts tell us that the expedition came for gold. Great quantities were mined and shipped off the planet. The community in South Africa was called "Abzu" and was the prime location of the mining operation.
According to the same texts, once the mining expedition ended, it was decided that humans should be allowed to perish in a flood predicted by the astronomer of the "gods." Apparently, the "god's" home planet, Nubiru, was coming close to earth. Its gravity would cause oceans to rise and flood the land. One "god" had sympathy for a particular human, Zuisudrd. The "god" warned Zuisudrd to construct a boat to ride out the flood... Did this really happen? Or were the Sumerian legends of life on other planets and the cloning of humans just science-fiction? The new evidence suggests that Abzu, South Africa, is real and existed when when homonoids suddenly evolved into modern man. The facts make this an interesting and debatable story.
