The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) warns that increasing biofuel production will lead to deaths in poorer countries. How? Mostly through higher food prices.
Most biofuels are made from food crops, such as corn. When corn is diverted to ethanol refineries, the demand for it rises, and so does the cost. Farmers then plant more corn in place of other crops, which then drives up the other crops' prices.
This is a big deal if you live on $1-2 a day. Diet and Cost of Food Around the world
The AAPS writes:
Increases in biofuels production over
2004 levels would push 35,000,000

countries. This could lead to at least

Resulting diseases would cause a 6,700,000 loss of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per year.
These numbers exceed the estimates of 141,000 deaths and 5,400,000 DALY's attributed to global warming each year.
Thus, biolfuel production would probably increase deaths and disease in developing countries rather than reduce them.
