New FCC
rules aim to increase Native American radio stations
http://t.love.com/296579515
Condensed by Native Village

The FCC [Federal Communications Commission] wants to
encourage more Native American radio stations. They have
made it a priority to consider requests by Indian Tribes
and Alaska Native villages for FM allotments. They will
also focus on tribes' proposals for AM and educational FM
stations.
The Native Public Media and the National Congress of
American Indians hail the FCC's order.
“In addition to some of the lowest levels of telephony
and broadband Internet services in the nation, American
Indians and Alaska Natives have been largely invisible
in the broadcasting industry on all levels ranging from
media access, to control and ownership of broadcast
facilities,” they stated.
Tribes hold licenses for
only 41 radio stations, yet more than 1,000,000 Native
people live in the United States. On rural
reservations, especially in emergencies, radio can be
the most effective means of communications.
It gives people a voice. |
