USDA Grants Support Research, Education and Extension Activities at Tribal Land-Grant Colleges

Washington D.C. 32 tribal land grant colleges and universities have received grants from the USDA [U.S. Department of Agriculture].

“The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching called tribal colleges the most significant development in American Indian communities since World War II,” said Roger Beachy. “We are proud to sponsor these tribal land-grant colleges and to enable them to better serve the more than 13,000 Native American students who attend them.”

For many Native students, tribal colleges and universities are the only way to further their education.  After graduation, they'll bring diversity and new ideas to the next generation of agricultural scientists.

Tribal colleges and universities use Native American culture throughout their curriculum. For example, a biology class may be combined with studies of native plant species.

The research grants enable tribal colleges to interact with other universities to address Native issues. These could include protecting water quality and preserving tribal forests.

The schools will also help Native American ranchers and farmers improve their profits..
