Meeting Applauds Australia's Support for
Indigenous Peoples More than 600 people attending an April convention at UNESCO headquarters in Paris spontaneously applauded after learning that Australia would now support the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. UNESCO is the acronym for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Mr. Mattias Ahren from the Saami Council of Arctic and northern Europe said Australia's support helps not only Australia's aboriginal people, but all Indigenous Peoples of the world. He said Indigenous Peoples welcomed the decision and thanked Australia for its positive change in international policy. The brief announcement drew immediate and prolonged applause during the Convention on Biological Diversity meeting. The group is developing a regime for access to and benefit sharing of genetic resources. One of the subjects under discussion was the protection of Indigenous Peoples' traditional knowledge rights in obtaining access to genetic resources. Aboriginal News Press Release
